We both fell head over heels in love with Scotland whilst on a road trip in 2014. Kilmartin was, by far, our favourite Scottish village! So, when Kilmartin Castle went up for sale, a few weeks after our holiday ended, we couldn't resist starting a new adventure. We sold all our worldly possessions and bought it.

Kilmartin Castle was built in 1550, when Mary Queen of Scots was on the throne, for the Rector of Kilmartin, John Carswell, who later became Bishop of the Isles. The castle was then held by the Campbell Clan for 200 years before being abadondoned for 200 more. Kilmartin Castle has been restored as a residence, and the castle and one acre of grounds were on the market for £375,000 in 2014. The castle can be seen from the main road, and may be rented through Airb&b.

Around 1790 Kilmartin Castle fell into ruin, but the ground floor was still in use as a schoolhouse. It is a mystery why the castle was left roofless for the following 200 years. We are grateful that it was overlooked by the Victorians though, who often made windows larger and added ugly extensions to buildings like this one.
